Alarm sounding for no apparent reason/won't start

I have a 2002 Yamaha 225 0X66. My problem is every now and then the warning alarm sounds as I am trying to start the motor. It usually starts out as a weak broken alarm and the engine will then start, run like it's flooded for a few seconds then die. Then when I turn the key again the alarm is solid and loud and the motor will not start at all. After waiting a while it starts and runs great.
I took it to my local Yamaha dealer and they spent 6 hours trying to find a problem but couldn't find a thing wrong. I took it back out and it ran fine all day until the end of the day when I got the weak alarm and the rough running motor again. It started, ran rough for a few seconds and then ran great. I made it to weigh-in and started it a few more times with no problems. This never occurs at the begining of the day.

tell them to fix the stop switch/emergency stop switch or the associated wiring, basic yamaha school will tell them that anytime you get a solid tone while cranking the white stop wire is shorted to ground so the ECU will set the tone to alert the operator of an incorrect operating condition.
wow that did not even take 6 hours of testing.
some where the ECU is sensing a ground on the stop circuit.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. Is this something I can do myself? Can I just trace the white wire and replace the hole wire? The only thing that doesn't make sense is that the motor never dies when I'm running. If it were a short wouldn't it kill the engine whenever it shorts out?

depends on if its a corrosion issue or an actual short. there are some splices in the harness here and there and that green nasty stuff is conductive, and there is 150V or so on that white wire :) . but thats why it wont start and the horn is sounding when you attempt to do it.
but if your not familiar with yamaha wiring colors and ADI ign systems I would defer it to someone who does.

Okay, would that also cause it to load up with fuel while I'm cranking it and make it run rough when I finally do get it started? I'm guessing if the wire is shorting or corroded it is keeping the spark plugs from firing and the fuel builds up in the cylinder quickly?...

that EFI system does not rely on on intake vacum to move fuel. it sprays anytime the CDI tells it to.
however when the top circuit is triggered the fuel pump turns off to prevent flooding.
but thats how the alarm system is wired, if the ECU sees a stop and a crank signal it figures something is very wrong and sets the ground for the alarm.
if ya dont believe it purchase the factory manual and a magnifying glass and trace the wireing.
if you wish you can test by removing the white wire from the ECU connector, if the problem goes away its in the wiring on the engine, or to the panel or in the panel, if it persists its in the ECU. with the white wire removed about the only way to kill the motor is disconect the red/yellow wire at the fuel pump or pull the fuel pump relay. at least thats where I would start my testing, if you can borrow another harness and keyswitch assy you can plug it in. yamaha has a "boat in a box" rig for this type testing. its just a keyswitch and tach assy to bypass the hull wiring.

Allright. Where can i get a "boat in a box" rig to try that theory out?

ask if your yamaha dealer has one, if they dont call yamahas consumer line and ask if they can reccomend a tech in your area.

Thank you Rodbolt! I found an exposed area on a wire in the harness and after taping it up I have not had a problem in the last five times on the water. (Knock on wood!) Major relief. Thanks again. Brett
