I am new to the forum and could use some info.
I have a 1989 90 Evinrude #90tlcem.If I run it close to full throttle the alarm goes off.Someone
told me it might be the impellor may be worn out
not allowing enough water to cool the engine. Is this a hard job?

Hi LoganII,

Not a real hard job if you have a Manual. Sounds like it may be the overheat alarm. When was the last time it had the waterpump serviced?

I don't have a clue when the last service was done. I have never owned an engine with an alarm on it.The first time it went off it was a shock.I have not had it long,it had been siting in a slip witout being run for a long time.

Re: Alarm sounds

If you don't know when it was last done, it's time to do it. Best to get the Manual and a waterpump kit and have at it. If you are mechanically inclined at all, it will be no problem. You have to remove the lower unit to get at it. Just some unbolting and bolting back up. No special tools are required to do the job and it is part of regular maintenence that you need to be familiar with. Or take it in for service if you feel uncomfortable getting into it. Either way, get it done before you run it any more...

Re: Alarm sounds

Was the alarm a constant tone or intermittent? Is the VRO pump and alarms still connected on this engine? If so the alarms as as follows: Low Oil alarm is one short tone every 20 seconds,No Oil alarm is rapid short tones, and Overheat is continuous tone.Just making sure you're not getting something other than overheat alarm.

Re: Alarm sounds

I bought this 2003 two sroke Yamaha outboard several yrs ago for my grands. After the newness wore off and it sat idol for a while as I couldnt get to it. It was not being used very ofton-but now one grand has become interested once again. Well we couldnt keep it running and needed an accelerant to even start it. I spoke to a mechanic and he told me to add "Medic" to the gas. Run it for ten minutes then wait two days and restart. It worked. But when we had the cowl off I noticed a connection was disconnected-(Never noticed it before, perhaps the prev owner disc)when I reconnected this alarm went off. It was a steady ring. The oil level is good and the pee is cool. The water pump and impellar was changed two yrs ago.The boat is trailored But an alarm goes off for a reason.
Any ideas?-your help will certainaly be appreciated.
Thanks-Terry-Florida Keys.
