iwas wondering if anyone knew how i can hook up a tach to my boat? currently running a merc 950

You might post the year or serial number, so we can figure out what lind of ignition system it has. Does the MerControl have the three prong connector? That is for the tach.

1933260 this is the ser. number and i do have a plug in the front of the shift control. can i hook any tach to this, also do i need to buy a special connecter to plug it in thanks for your input

Looks to be a 1966 Motor. The 1966 Merc 950 looks to have two different kinds of ingition systems. One is a dual breaker point systems, and the other has a solid state trigger. I am not sure what kind of tachometer would work with those systems. You might look to see which ign system you have.

If it has a 12 pole stator, just get 12 pole/6 pulse tach and hook up the signal wire to one of the yellow wires (from the stator) at the rectifier. It won't matter what type of ignition you have. I have run these type of tachs on Merc motors with Magnetos and Thunderbolt ignitions. Some tachs will have an adjustment screw on the back to set the pulse setting.

Do you already have a tach? Some tachs from Mercury or Airguide were more engine specific, as they got their signal from the switchbox or had a separate module (Airguide).

thanks guys i dont know which ignition i have but this weekend i will try to see is there anything that would stand out to let me know for sure which one i have?
