What is wrong with these jerks in California?? What are they thinking???<br /><br />(03-08) 18:39 PST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A proposed amendment to California's constitution would give 16-year-olds a half-vote and 14-year-olds a quarter-vote in state elections. <br /><br />State Sen. John Vasconcellos, among four lawmakers to propose the idea on Monday, said the Internet, cellular phones, multichannel television and a diverse society makes today's teens better informed than their predecessors. <br /><br />The idea requires two-thirds approval by the Legislature to appear on the November ballot. <br /><br />"When we gave the vote to those who didn't own property, then to women, then to persons of all colors, we added to the richness of our democratic dialogue and our own nation's integrity and its model for the world," Vasconcellos said, calling it time to further extend the vote. <br /><br />A Republican colleague said it was "the nuttiest idea I've ever heard." <br /><br />Said Assemblyman Ray Haynes: "There's a reason why 14-year-olds and 16-year-olds don't vote. They are not adults. They are not mature enough. They are easily deceived by political charlatans." <br /><br />Student supporters said the idea could give them a say in issues such as education funding and bring new voices to the California electorate. <br /><br />"If we could vote, politicians would see us as votes, not just kids, and they would take our issues seriously," said Robert Reynolds, a student at Berkeley High School.

Re: Allow 14 year olds to vote!!

They can't vote because they don't pay taxes. They don't pay taxes because they don't work. They don't work because their job is to stay in school and become educated.<br />Once they finish all of the requirements of the educational system (or reach a certian age)they can vote.<br />With rights come responsibilities. <br />They have few rights because they are responsible for very little. <br />Sorry for the rant.

Re: Allow 14 year olds to vote!!

Coming from a person who deals with 13&14 year-olds 5 days a week, they would be making a huge mistake passing this. No way!!<br /> These teens don't have a clue as to what is best for the state. They don't even know what's best for themselves. Those crackpots in Sacramento have way too much free time on their hands. <br />Do I sound angry? Boy, this hit a nerve!<br />Bassy  <br />Edit: Do they really think that will help with the crime and graffiti? Nuts, just nuts!

I do not even think 18 year olds should be able to vote, sure they can go into the service, and get killed, but do they have a clue as to what is going on in governmant? Not at all, at least 95% of them. I didnt have a clue as to what was going on untill I was in my thirties, Just didnt care. Wouldnt feel bad if they raised the voting age to 25! Young heads full of mush have no reason to vote, they are too easily purswaded my the liberal schools!

Re: Allow 14 year olds to vote!!

This is absolutely outrageous!! I believe that 18 should be the minimum. I think it would be better to make 20 the legal age for EVERYTHING except driving. The current driving age requirements here in Tennessee seem to be sufficient to me. They would be no better off at 20 and never driving than they would be at 16. Now for things like voting, selective service, and drinking, 20 should be the age. Back when I was under 21 it really ticked me off that I could be FORCED to go fight even though I couldn't buy a friggin beer, or in some states, a stupid lottery ticket. Now honestly, if the country was being attacked and I was really needed I would've gone with no problem, but I didn't want to be FORCED into anything like that if I couldn't buy a friggin beer. They should just make everything one age. Anyhow, the drinking age being 21 would never have stopped me if I wanted anything. It's not like I couldn't run into town and get a bum to buy it for me. It's just another one of those things that look good on paper but not in reality.

Yea the day they let 14 year olds vote will be a very sad day again for our country.<br />None of them knows anything about nothing.<br />A lot of older people are that way also.<br /><br />They just need to worry about reading, writing and arithmetic and not worry about voting on something they do not have a clue about.

Re: Allow 14 year olds to vote!!

There was another onetime Californian who had an interesting idea about the right to vote.<br />He claimed that only those who had served in the armed forces of their nation should have the right to vote or be citizens, because they were willing to put their lives on the line for their country and what it stands for.<br />Everybody else could be a permanent resident.<br />That person was Robert Heinlein and he promoted his idea in a book called "space troopers"<br />So there it is.Which idea do you like better?

Who cares!?!?!? It’s not like they could mess anything up worse than it already is out here. :) <br /><br />Fwiw, the state is also populated by those that think it should be divided. First, Northern and Southern Californias. Now, they want a Meso-California as well. Then we have a group of idiot Mexicans in office that claim the whole thing was stolen from Mexico and should be given back… the Indians haven’t given up on Alcatraz Island, either. Probably just rearming with money earned from the casinos. The Sierra Club (a.k.a. the Communist) was instrumental in bringing you MTBE in the gasoline. God, we could do a whole thread on that disaster and the governmental corruption therein. Now they want to reclaim the Hetch-Hetchy valley. No suggestion on how to supply water to the S.F. Bay Area. It never ends…it’s all just good entertainment! :) <br /><br />Rolmops – some districts in California have illegally installed one or two high-school seniors as non-voting advisors that sit on school boards. Their peers elect them.

I don't think they should be allowed to vote either but........ What about taxation without repestation(sorry abou the spelling, you know what I mean)? Little kids every day buy candy with money they made cleaning the yard or something of that effect. They pay taxes on it. Where is there rights to be heard?

Hey KB, we hear from them ever day.<br />They don't make any more sense today than a 14 year old did back when I was 14.<br />They have not a clue. They think they do, but they don't.<br />No, let them grow up as kids. They have a hard enough time just doing that.

It was brought to you by the same group that brought you gay marraiges. We are undergoing a complete breakdown in this society. After all, there is nothing that is not OK today. Whatever YOUR conscience dictates. I know I'll catch h*ll for this but if you are interested in connecting all of the dots read Pat Buchannan's Death of the West. It will shock you out of your TOLERANT complacency.
