The cables need to flex and move.
No they don't. If they flex and move you get lost motion. There was an OMC expert named Dave Brown that was the guru on these. That was what he had people do and it is what I did and helped tremendously.

well I think I have come to the conclusion that the dog gears are shot... I took it out in the water and it just doesn't matter what I did, the thing does not like going forward smooth. I can by hand pull the shift cable and it still clunks going forward and wont fully engage

Ayuh,.... If that's how it is, ya need a used drive with the right gear ratio in better shape than yer's,.....

Or there's the SEI conversion to mount a Merc Alpha,...

If you are getting a clunk while applying power, then your dog clutch is shot.

This is the first time you mentioned this issue. Before you said that once it goes into gear, it stays in gear.

well I found another lower unit gears & assembly and dog clutch, right now I have it all apart. Just waiting on some big ass snap ring pliers to show up. I'm stuck at that point, once I get them out I will be able to see the dog clutch and gears.

It was like that, but not anymore. My brother noticed when it did go into gear the outdrive was kind of moving back and forth. ( like skipping) Reverse was smooth, but forward had something wrong with it. Kind of hard to explain in words.

If it ever clunked while power is applied, you likely wiped out the dog clutch already. Doesn't take much.

when replacing the dog clutch, do the gears have to be replaced as well?

Ayuh,.... They're matched sets,....

Replacin' just one face, will kill 'em both,....

Then I can take a look at the damage....

Ayuh,.... Just keep in mind, it's like machine tools or swiss watches, thousandths count,....

Sometimes "Polished" is worn out,.....

well.......got a new clutch and gears, just installed them last night. It was actually pretty easy, if your good at taking stuff apart and remembering where it went.

I will mate the top and bottom tonight and try to get it back in the boat by the weekend. I'll report back and let you know how it shifts.

So I'm in the same boat... last season I lost reverse about 3/4 of the way through...but I had read up and my boat had been slipping out of gear since I bought it.. aka. ONE thump when leaving the dock for two or so years. Then I had someone adjust it...and it ended up all F'd up...

I started by getting a re manufactured lower for 800 bucks from sterndrive.cc.. I've got that all put back together but now I'm also just going to go for broke, replacing the intermediate shift cable/bellows/etc..

What guide did you follow to remove the pivot housing? I'll be diving into this project tomorrow morning head first..
