Im new to boats. Heres what i think i understand and please correct me as im learning. When putting alpha 1 gen 2 in forward or reverse gear they grind for a split second. Is this ok? From what i here the shift interupt only works when taking outta gear and the rpms drop for a split second. Is this right? My forward and reverse is timed correctly i think as it does go in forw and reverse when moved into the locations. I cringe hearing the grind for the spli second and hope its ok. I think the interupt system only works in water not on muffs. Is this correct? Please help as i dont wanta tear up my lower unit

Ayuh,... You are Correct,... Shift into gear, Briskly... You want a single Clunk, not grinding...

Shift into gear, Briskly...

That means don't baby it, just put it into gear like you mean it. It doesn't have to be a speed shift you have to concentrate on, just put it in gear.

Sweet thanks for the info as i thought something was outta adjustment. ifirst herd it on muffs and kinda slowly shifted and it was like clickclickclickclickclack but in water it was more like a split clunk. If interupt wasnt working it wouldnt come outta gear right?

Right, the interrupt only work when coming out of gear.

Alphas are notorious for grinding. best thing i can say is just shift the sucker. the more you take the time to ease it into gear the more grinding you hear. like everyone says just throw the thing into gear and go from there!

Good luck!

is there an adjustment, or check one can make? Mine has been getting worse with the grinding over the last summer...It used to just 'chunk' into gear, but has been grinding for up to a second before it engages...I set the idle down, and it helped a little. I had the lower leg apart last year, and all seemed in good repair...Might i have a stretched cable?
