As part of my repower on mu 2006 Sea Ray 185 with a 4.3 I am resealing the outdrive I purchased with the correct gear ratio. I have the full Mercruiser manual for the outdrive and all is pretty straight forward coupled with the videos I found online until I get to setting the preload on the Drive Shaft Yoke bearing/gear assembly. I replaced the large oil seal in that assembly. I saw a few previously posts, however it wasn't clear on the actual process to check the preload. I haven't set bearing preload before so if someone has a minute to break it down barney style it is greatly appreciated. Do I have to have an inch pound dial type torque wrench ($$$)? I want to be sure I understand the manual correctly, after preloading the bearing I hold the outer cup and turn the nut with the torque wrench to get the reading? Since it is a used bearing I assume I'm looking for 8-Inch Lbs as specified? I am using a new tapered washer and lock nut. Sorry for the questions, just want to get this right, thanks

yes, you need an lb/in dial torque wrench, perhaps you could borrow one or take the assy to a local reputable shop that works on mercruiser drives and have them set the rolling torque

iirc, the rolling torque spec for USED bearings is 3-7 lb/in, best to try for 5 lb/in

Thanks Dubs, been doing more reading and got the process down, now the search for a dial torque wrench. Odd enough live on the water here in NW Florida but not much in the way of outdrive repairs, lots of outboard shops.

Which one did you buy? I like the looks of the Seekonk but too spendy for my budget. Might see if I can find one to rent.

I bought a used one off ebay and and did a low tech check for calibration. Certainty open to letting you borrow it, just send me a message if our interested.

AcDelco makes a couple different ones, not sure on the accuracy of them. #ARM601-3 and ARM602-4. Looks like they read inch and ft lbs. up to a certain amount.

I used this for the same bearing preload setting when changing rear end gears works great and isn’t a ton of money

Hmmm, like the looks of the AC Delco ones but they don't go down low enough for the 5 to 7 inch lb spec. They go down to 3.7 ft lb which translates to 44.4 inch lb.
