Alpha 1 Gen II - Transom: 0L517680 Drive: 0L192679 1.62 R (1.81R scratched on top) (original drive SN: L40356)

First time installing this drive. Impeller, the upper/lower assembly, and the drive assembly all went smoothly - no issues.

1) I followed the SELOC manual, and didn't see anything about gluing the big housing ring. The new ring sat in nicely and the drive went in smoothly, once. I would never have questioned it, but just read about this in another thread.

Is it recommended to pull and glue? if so, what type of glue? (I don't have bellows glue.)

2) I checked to make sure the prop locked in FWD and REV, and the 90 degree shift arm is engaged in the foot. When in FWD, it locked spinning CCW, and sounded like a ratchet when spun CW. However, when in REV, it locked spinning CW, but clanked when spinning CCW.

I've been reading about issues with spline indexing and I want to know what to look for when starting it up in case I got it wrong. (besides water expelling).

3) Any reason to test the shifting on muffs based on the clanking above?

Thanks!

1 bellows adhesive, gorilla glue, contact cement, weatherstrip adhesive, etc.If the ring is dis-lodged during drive installation water can enter the belloes area.
2 In fwd the prop will lock CCW, in rev it will lock CW.
"spline indexing" Assuming you mean the splined shaft used in Alpha drives. GEN II dosent use that system.
3 You always do a run test, just to be sure you did it correctly

First things first, ditch that Seloc manual. They are basically junk. Get yourself an OEM service-manual...either by purchasing one or by viewing it at www . boatinfo . no under the Merc section of the Manuals page.

The online manuals are not very user-friendly. I bought the SELOC manual from THIS SITE :)

I went back the online ones and just created links:
Sterndrive installation
Drive shaft housting part & lube
engine
manifold
Trim
Transom

With the iPad... I can have the manual in the shop :)

and yes, I'll go back in and glue that damn ring down, even though I KNOW it's in :)!

thanks.

Great idea, until you need to refer back to the page on the iPad, or want to pinch-zoom into something and realize you hands are coated in a mixture of spline grease, gimbal bearing grease, and carbon crud, and now you are going to get that all over your screen

Was right there with you last week. I finally went with gluing it down. I'm sure I'll regret it next time I pull the outdrive and need to clean all that goop off of the ring seat before replacing.

Yes they are a pain but for quick reference they are handy. I use mine enough that I just went ahead and ordered paper copies. Later on you'll realize why the Seloc manual is preferred more as a cushion than as a manual. Good luck!

I tried Gorilla glue, and am not thrilled with the results. The ring is in, and not going anywhere, but gorilla glue expands and hardens. Even with the slightest smear, there is slight residual on the aft facing surface. and wherever there is glue, it is hard.

I want rubber against metal. But I don't know... 6 bolts at 50 ft# is a lot of pressure. Maybe the glue residue is insignificant under that compression. I'm not a glue/rubber expert.

Next time (and maybe this time), bellows adhesive or contact cement would be the better choice (anything non-expanding and non-hardening).

My $.02

Bellows adhesive is the same thing as 3M Weatherstrip adhesive - just for future reference. And you can pick that up pretty much anywhere.
