Re: Alpha 1 Upper unit Drive Shaft seals

I have all of the seals in place and now I need to pre-load the nut on the driveshaft yoke. The book says it should turn
between 6 and 10 in/lbs. This nut is huge. What do you use to check this preload ? Looking at torque wrenches but trying
to get a 1/4 in drive torque wrench adapted to this huge nut doesn't look good.

Thanks

'That nut' is 15/16", use a 1/4" to 3/8" or 1/2" adapter, then the right socket.... Check the rolling torque exactly the way the book shows it....

This if fine except I can't locate a torque wrench that accurately measures between 6 and 10 in/lb. All I can find start at 25 or 30 in/lb.
Any suggestions ?

i'd think google'd be your friend. on the first page there's one that does 1-75 in lbs. granted, kinda on the low end of the scale. but it'll read it... fwiw. i needed my driven shaft in my upper rolling torque measured. i took it to my dealer and he helped me check it out. he did it, then he let me do it. this was after brg. replacement that they did and charged me for. my dealers tech's inch lb. torque wrench measured in aprox. the 1-75 in lb range. we were looking for 4-10 also. the needle hardly moves. but enough to tell.

Try here -> http://www.seekonk.com/torqstart.html

Select 'Torque Gauges - Inch pound graduations', then click FIND.

Look at TSQ-30 (the first in the list).... Measures 0 to 30 in/lb.

I went to a local mechanic and found out something that is very interesting.
The early Alpha's don't require that you play this torque game. Just torque them
down to 85 ft/lb and your done. Well he checked mine and it was right on the numbers.
He said no matter how much you torque one of these down it will not increase the
preload. Saved me a bunch of money. Best $40 I ever spent.

that only works if there is a 1/4" spacer between the bearings - if there is no spacer then you must set the rolling torque using a dial torque wrench

What pictures are you referring to? Otgy's original posted photos dont show up. Fishermark's posted photos do show up. I didnt see where dubs283 had posted any pictures in this thread. There are issues with how photos are posted. Photobucket works best for me.

why can't I get duds original picture up

When we upgraded the forum to the latest version, one of the things that has been misplaced are the user image database. Any images loaded to the iboats database will not be displayed just yet. Images loaded to sharing sites and then the links used here will still display. The software gurus are working on this and a host of other issues, so bear with us and we'll get it sorted.

Chris...........
(I have 581 images in that database )
