I have changed the gear lube religiously on my Merc 3.0 Alpha I outdrive. There are currently 250 hours on it.
There has never been any evidence of water in the oil. The boat is stored on a trailer and launched for each use.
The mystery is that I have to occasionally add lube to the reservoir. There is never any puddling of lube on the driveway or any visible leakage of any kind. I see no evidence of lube in the transom.
