I'm trying to adjust it, and at 6" the plastic piece in the bellhousing goes out too far and disengages from the lever. With the brass adjuster maxed out at the nut and brass cylinder shaped piece, it just BARELY works. Why is this new cable giving me troublez

the cable is adjusted wih the drive on and locked in forward gear, use a bungee on the prop to hold the drive in gear while adjusting the 6"

Yes but with the drive off can't u allign it ? Like a ballpark allignment? Because right now if I put gear shifter forward . The end that has a fork on it that meshes with the lever of at the bellhousing, the knob falls out of the teeth.

Re: Alpha one gen two/3.0 lower shift cable trouble

you will not be able to adjust with the drive off, you won't know if/when the drive is in fwd

leave the engine side of the cable off the shift plate assy when hanging the drive, its easier to move the cable to install the drive

its a little tricky to get the shift slide to stay upright and aligned with the roller, but that is how it has to be done - when you pull and re-install an alpha drive more than 100 times, it gets easier :)

Nope.... Drive MUST be on.... Not even a 'ballpark' adjustment can be done (well, it can, but you need a few years/decades of experience to be able to do it, and no, I can't explain it. It's a touchy feely sort of thing)....

That's because there is no drive to stop the cable moving aft.... Put the drive back on, THEN start your adjustment procedure.

Chris.......

Drive is fully installed. Still can't get it short enough to get measurement from barrel adjuster to hole (hole to home) to 6" it's max adjustment is at about 7"..

I push the cable in fully and chalk the prop CCW . Hole to hole is about 7". The brass barel adjuster is at the middle of the rod(no more threads to make it 6". Is my cable too long? I got it in a eBay kit so not sure if its oem or not, don't think so.

Did you have someone turn the prop CCW while you pushed the cable in? That's quite important. And what do you mean by 'chalk the prop CCW'?

Ebay cable could also be an issue....

Re: Alpha one gen two/3.0 lower shift cable trouble

I had a jack holding the prop counter clockwise . And I pushed in fully on cable end still can only get it to 7" no less. I think I have to trim a inch off the cable

Just wanted go confirm all tests first

Re: Alpha one gen two/3.0 lower shift cable trouble

trimming the cable will ruin it, merc did away with those years ago

you did something wrong with the drive install, either the shift slide isn't lined up with the roller arm or the shift fork and shift shaft aren't lined up properly

are you 100% sure your have the drive in fwd gear?? - straight fore and aft is fwd gear for the drive shift shaft/fork

A jack holding the prop is not a person turning it... The prop needs to be turned (not held) CCW while the cable is being pushed in...

I also asked 2 questions and only got an answer for one.... So, I'll ask again. What do you mean by 'chalk the prop CCW'?

Re: Alpha one gen two/3.0 lower shift cable trouble

By chalking the prop ccw I meant I propped something against it to keep it locked against CCW

Ill try again with someone spinning it .

I'm 100% sure everything lined up. I can see the shafts from below and they are lined up. I also seen the fork lined up correctly a half inch before fully seating the drive. Drive went on without having to force it with nuts.

Well the cable broke. Pulled out of the bellhousing end of the crimp? Wasn't even pulling that hard was trying to go into reverse and once it hit reverse it just pulled up thru it's outer core. Drive is back off and everything looked good. So ordering an OE innercore

you should have set the forward shift at 6" on the drive shift cable - once done you do not move the barrel trunion at all

if you need more reverse adjustment, you can move the cable end connection up in the slot until you achieve full reverse gear lock - otherwise you will need to adjust the remote shift cable

seeing as how you have an issue with forward gear, are you sure you set it correctly?? did you install a new cable after you broke the other one??

Re: Alpha one gen two/3.0 lower shift cable trouble

Readjusted it to make sure it's at 6" and it was off by 1:4" now it clicks into forward and reverse. But not as bad. Is it because its out of water?
