Charlie,

You are correct. That washer on the bottom right fits perfectly in the top of the housing between the stainless cup and the raised edge of the center of the housing. The photo I supplied shows the pump kit installed in my drive with the washer inside the housing.

My first impression was, hey, this looks like a better mousetrap than just having the washer freewheeling on the top of the housing...but then I stopped for a second, and two thoughts came to me

1) it's not suppose to be inside the housing if you look at every other pump out there.

2) I assume that the plastic will cause the washer to sometimes spin, sometimes not spin, and in that process either melt the top of the housing or eventually wear the washer down to nothing.

Maybe if it's glued into the housing and that would make it only have to spin on the shaft and if I greased the shaft it might work out well.

Either way, I am just about to put this together and launch. My boat is a 1/2 hr away from my house and I do not want to have to take it out and drag it home to fix it halfway through the season.

Where I keep my boat I have no launch ramp and the closest one is downriver about a mile or so from my slip. It would be areal pain to have to pull it because of something stupid like this.

Unless someone in the next 12 hours pops up on this forum with solid proof of this housing being a success I am either going to get a new top housing (OEM) or just put the slinger on top...like it said in the manual.

I was able to downsize one of the photos. Have a look for yourself. The slinger is inside the housing and installed.Looks like it belongs there.

It does NOT belong inside the housing. Did you have a look at my video? All you are going to do with it there is generate MASSIVE amounts of heat and melt the housing.

Yeah, I think it comes down to this: you would think that there would be a seal on the top of the pump where the driveshaft goes through, but there is not. If I recall what mine looks like, there are a couple of ridges on the top and bottom of the impeller, and these seal against the steel pump liner and steel bottom plate of the pump, so no shaft seal needed. Besides the whole setup is a high volume low pressure system, and the outside of the pump is "wet" and any leakage just goes out with the exhaust And the rest of the raw water from the engine.
