Alpha One Gen 1, engine SN 0B651656, drive SN 0B612075, transom assembly SN 0B667146

I pulled the boat apart for a full gut/restore starting last September and just set the power steering unit and cable to the side - at the time I couldn't get the cable to come out of the unit. It's time to figure this out as the boat has started going back together. I want to do a new steering cable. When I tried taking this apart last year, I removed the bracket that keeps the steering cable nut from turning, removed the steering cable nut, and expected the end of the cable to just slide out of the black tube. That didn't happen. While the unit was still in the boat I ended up hammering the cable end as far as you can see in the pictures, but stopped. Should I just keep hammering or am I missing something? Have I already broken it by hammering it this far? Appreciate any insight.

carefully cut the tube off the cable and replace the tube , corrosion is holding it in place OR
replace the cable and tube

It could be tight with old grease etc. Since you are thinking of getting a new tube anyway, I would heat up the tube with a heat gun or torch and see if the steering cable comes out. Nothing to lose to try.

If heat and penetrating oil does not work then try this.
To make it easier to handle unscrew bolt #19 and pull off the tapered bolt with #17 that the Doc sent. Then pull the cable jacket as far out as possible then if you have an abrasive saw blade cut the inner cable next to the outer jacket. If you have a vise stand the tube with the #22 nut on top of the vise and drive it down with a suitable size hammer.
If you cannot remove the #19 because it just rotates then loosen # 22 and rotate the whole linkage until the tube unscrews from #17.

I was able to get the old cable out with some lubricant and a hammer. I'll clean up the inside of the tube really good.

Appreciate the input guys!
