I need to remove the lower shift shaft from my outdrive, but there is a "nut / bushing" that requires a special tool. Does anyone know of a way to make a homemade tool, or a way to remove this nut without buying the special tool?

Thanks.

Here are some homemade tools I made for my 470 rebuild. I used sockets, nuts, and threaded rod to pull out a bunch of bushings from my lower unit. Maybe one of these is what you need?

So does this brass brushing that is around the top of my shift shaft screw out, or is it just wedged in place and needs to be pounded out?

The bushing unscrews,BUT you must hold the splined shaft down while removing the bushing.
A tool can be made using a 3/4 impact socket and a die grinder to cut in the 2 legs needed for the bushing.a 1/4 inch socket is used on the splined shaft as a internal spacer for the 3/4 socket.

I read your post hurriedly and sent you an irrelevant link, but this jogged my memory. I made a tool to remove the bushing (if it's the one I'm think about) with a section of black pipe. I welded on a couple of wings that fit the slots and used vice grips to turn the pipe. Forgot to include that one in my improvised 470 tools thread.

I've got a little flux core welder, and I save all crap metal for just such occasions.
