alt ?

I bought a new alt and my ? is when the batt switch is on and key off does the alt suppose to get warm????

so then my wiring is wrong then maybe???? its a 3wire alt so i have the batt red wire and small black wire together and red small wire to key switch.... sounds right???

Maybe I'm mistaken........ but I believe the small black wire is ground and small red wire is the exciter to get alt working....
