I have been having trouble with my 1980 Mercury 50 hp fouling out plugs. The plugs that are in it are the flat type. Are their any alternative regular spark plugs I can use in this motor? I figured I would give them a try and see if it helps.

Champion spark plugs have alternate standard type spark plugs for most engines. I run them in my Merc since NGK is not readily available.

The mercury ignition system will make a spark that will jump an inch, fire almost any plug, and make your brother pee down both legs.

You might be sneaking up on real trouble with a weak spark. Check it out.

I think you should fix the problem rather than try to band-aid it. Are you mixing quality oil 50:1? How long have you had the motor? Did you buy it from somewhere at a lower elevation? Has the motor sat long without running?

Give us some background info and we will try to help.

Additionally, you might give Silvertip a querry. He put me onto a NGK gapped plug that I really like. I just don't like surface gap plugs and don't do the things that they were made to tolerate......lots of trolling and long WOT runs with a heavy boat.

Thanks Mark -- Trying to get me in trouble? :)

What plug number and manufacturer are you using now? I'll try to help you. Send me a private message. I'll explain why later.
