Alternator belt replacement worries

I have a 165hp, in-line 6 Mercruiser and want to replace the alternator belt. I found a couple other posts about how to do it, but wasn't sure if those methods applied to my engine. I've attached a pic showing the two bolts on the port side I plan on removing, along with the block that looks like will be freed after removing the bolts. I'm worried if I do this, the engine will tilt to the port side. Will that happen? Should I support the engine before removing those bolts? Or am I way off in my approach?
Also, when I do replace it, should I just go to an automotive store for the belt? If I go to a marine parts supply, the price always seems to double because its a marine part.
Thanks

Go ahead buy the auto belt. And the motor won't move when you remove the block.

Just get the right width, the belt pulls from the sides not the bottom.

Tie another belt around the mount so you will have a extra one if it breaks on the water.

All you would need is a 1/2 wrench and a screwdriver to leverage the alternator.

Nope,.... Not as long as you Don't loosen the bolts on the Other side

Ayuh,....

A Belt of the proper size is a Belt of the proper size,.... Go for it....

I've never had one move as long as the 2 bolts on the other side of that mount are tight. If it makes you fell better, block the engine. No harm will be done.

Thanks guys. I'll take your word for it that the engine won't move. Between the three of you, you have 39,605 posts, so I'm confident your advice is accurate. This is a great forum. I've learned so much here.

Re: Alternator belt replacement worries

I finally got around to the alternator belt. I removed the two bolts and the block on the port side. Tried to slip the old belt off and found out there is less than 1/4 inch clearance between the crank pulley and the front engine mount. In fact there is probably only 1/8" clearance at about the 7 o'clock position on the pulley (looking at engine from front). Do I have to remove the pulley? Can that even be done? Is my engine installed incorrectly? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

The bottom of the front mount might be a smidgen too close to the pulley.

Have someone stand bye with a pipe about 4-5 feet long and a flat piece of wood to put between the front corner of the oil pan and the pipe.

Have him leverage the motor slightly, take off the single large nut on top of the motor mount, and washers. You loosen front mount bolts fastened to the floor, just back off about 2 turns, also at the same time remove the 2 port bolts, than tell your friend to get ready and leverage when he sees you take out the starboard bolts.

Install belts quick with the spare one and let your friend lower the engine as you guide the engine back on the mount with the bolts.

Tighten the floor bolts, install the washers and main single large nut.

With the spare belt tied around the front mount, your ready if you ever snap a belt on the water.
