help me understand this please. My alternator went bad on my 1988 3.0 omc motor. Ok so i found a aftermarket alternator that fits from a gm motor car. Now when i try to turn the engine off on my boat it wont shut off. Like the ignition key is bad or something. BUT it isnt bad it works fine. I ran it through tests and it all checks out. Is there something in the old marine alternator that shuts the engine down when the key is turned off?

Re: alternator issue

Take the old alternator to a electric motor shop and have it rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of a replacement. Just like JJ said do not put an automotive alternator in that boat or the next sound you could be hearing is BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT put that boat back in the water until you get the proper marine alternator installed. Safety is no place to get cheap.
