Maybe it is a stupid question, but does this motor have an alternator included to charge the battery for the starter, and maybe, other needs?

I think all the Yachtwins provide a little charge, I think around 3 or 4 amps max. To be sure, see if it has a rectifier. It's a round "can" joined to a flat plate. Like this (seen from back):

That'd be perfect for pushing your boat. Wish I had one... :)

Re: alternator on rude electric start 10hp

Hello Mr Moir.I need this info becaus i am already looking for a motor for my 19 ft sailboat. i had to choose between many olds 7.5 rude from de '50. three weeks ago i found a 7.5 honda 4 stroke long shaft for 750$ can. i was near to buy it when somebody offered me a rude 1980 10hp long shaft too, with electric start. after getting infos (thank's to RB) the Honda weight 77 lbs for 7.5hp, manual start, and the rude 72 lbs for 10 hp electric start and 700$ can. And i don talk about the big headed honda.. Oh my god! what a big motor! So i think i will have a small trip to look at the rude.. more power, possibility to charge battery for bilge pump and lighting, less weight, smaller.. I think i finally found what i needed! Of course, i don,t remember where you are in Nova Scotia.

Don't forget your compression tester! You should read over 100psi and less than 10% difference between cylinders.
I found a picture of that rectifier in it's element. You can see the can just under that terminal strip, even with the lower cowling. Some of the paint is chipped off of it.

That's an '89 model, so it might be a little different.
I had a look at some pics of an Islands 19. It's a nice looking boat, but I think the 9.9hp will probably get it up on plane! :) At least you won't be lacking power.
I'm here in Dartmouth if there's anything I can do for you.

Re: alternator on rude electric start 10hp

Hope you can get out of all the snow you had this last week
Thank you very much!I went to Dartmouth two last summers. I really love the N.S. east coast. An I would like to explore all theses prettys bays. In spite of many Sail boat owners advice who tell me 4hp is enough, some situations i experimented last summer in Northumberland straight tell me i would prefer have more power than less. I am also suspicious about currents, tides and winds when entering a small pass of a bay. In fact, i was near ready to buy the Honda 7.5 but after seeing the Rude 10 hp for 5 less pounds I think it will be good. Do you really think i can make the Islands planning? Wher did you found Islands photos? in last year of research, i only found two owners of Islands 19! do you know some others ones?

Re: alternator on rude electric start 10hp

I think your right; while 4hp would do ya, with 9.9hp you'll never wish you had more. My brother uses a 4hp on his boat, and there's been times I wish we had more. At the very least, you won't be stuck running the engine flat out all the time.
I was sort of joking about planing the Islands. But mabey not. My brother's boat employs a semi-planing hull. Although it's only 24' long, it can hit 10 knots. (speed/sqrt(DWL) = 2.3!) It would be interesting to see if you could hit 8 knots with the 9.9.
In my limited experience, I've never seen an Islands 19 in real life. There sure doesn't seem to be many out there. I was able to find this though.

The snow is melting away now. The only real problem (of course) were the drifts. I had to shovel a 5' one that decided covered my driveway. :(
Thank goodness we didn't wimp out and call the army like TO though! :)

What ist the meaning of the calculation

speed/sqrt(DWL) = 2.3

is it: speed(in knot?)divided by de square root of (dwl) (what is dwl?), and what does mean de 2.3

Re: alternator on rude electric start 10hp

Oh, I got that from Skene's Elements of Yacht Design. Speed is in MPH (not knots). DWL is Designed Water Line, sometimes called LWL (Length of Waterline). Under 19' on your boat. My brother's boat is a 24' LOA (Length Over All), but has a 20' DWL. I actually miscalculated above, the answer should be 2.5.

Skene defines planing as happening when
speed/sqrt(DWL) > 2
As you probably already know, hull speed is around
speed/sqrt(DWL) = 1.34.

The 4hp pushes my brother's boat at a little under hull speed.

Re: alternator on rude electric start 10hp

I will be able to test all theses scientifics calculations! :D I finally bought it :)
It is misfiring at all speed, but there is a tune up to do on it, first the plugs are not good make an model (ngk), i will begin with this, and go further after. it seems to have an electronic ignition, so i think there is no breaker point to ajust.
Does the front knob is for high or low speed?
What are the others things to check?
