Aluminium Boat Paint Question - right up your alley WOG

I have read many threads on prep, etc from the resident experts. I want to use a flat paint in a desert tan camo color. Majic makes a camo paint..BUT it is not compatible with their hardener and reducer (called them direct and that is what they told me).

Can I buy Rustoleum flat white and tint it to the tan color I want at HD or Lowes and then add the Majic hardener and reducer to do the Roll-N-Roll method as described by WOG and others? If there is a better Flat Enamel option out there that I can use hardener with, I am open to that. I have a Sherwin Williams close by if that matters.

The boat will be trailered and won't be left in the water extended periods...couple of days at most, but probably just daily use then back on the trailer.

Here's the problem, the hardener is formulated for High Gloss Alkyd based Oil enamel Paints. The Flat Paint, no matter what brand is not gunna work with the hardener added. What I would recommend is to use the Gloss Rustoleum with the hardener and then add 10% Talc to the mix to "Take the Gloss Off" (You'll need to add a bit more thinner after adding the talc) and then after 72 hours wipe it down with Xylene and then wet sand it with 320 grit to "Dull the Paint" even further.

OK. Thanks for the response. For educational purposes, why should I wipe with Xylene before wet sanding and could I use Acetone instead?

Xylene is a bit more agressibe and will "Dull" the gloss a bit more than Acetone. You can use either. Just don't leave either one on very long. Just a damp rag and a light wipe down followed by a dry towel. Several wipe downs may be required to get the look you want. The sanding will be effective but care must be take as to NOT sand thru the paint.

Washed TSP, sanded, acetone, phosphoric acid wash (Klean Strip phosphoric prep and etch), coat SE spray primer, 2 coats Majic primer, 2 coats Majic International Harvester White paint with reducer and hardner per WOG roll-n-roll. Perfect...no...darn good...heck to the yes. Thanks for the paint instructions WOG!

How long do i need to let it cure before I flip and put back on the bunks on my trailer? Here is a relative close up shot in garage with so-so lighting.

I'd wait 2 days if the temps are in the 80's and you get her in direct sunlight to really harden the paint.

I have to say you did a wonderful job on that boat. Looks amazing for sure... Proper prep is the secret as you absolutely know... Good job and post...

I got the inside prepped and in Zinc Chromate primer. Sorry picture is bad...not good light in the garage early a.m. Anyway, primer says ready to sand or topcoat in 30 minutes. I really don't want to sand and have to "de-dust" the inside of the boat...as it is a pain with the spaces under the ribs (for water to drain). I had it sand blasted and it took me several washes to get all the sand out of it. Can I just go over the top of Zinc primer with Majic metal primer 2 coats then Majic paint 2-3 coats? I bought some of the Preval sprayers to lay down the primer and the top coats. Here is a link. Preval 9 oz. Complete Spray Gun-267 at The Home Depot Thank you.

IMHO you'll LOVE the Preval. One power unit will spray the equivalent of 2-3 spray cans. It does put out a bit more volume so I'd only thin it using a 50/50 mix of Mineral Spirits and Acetone 5oz of paint and 1 oz of thinner in the 6 oz Preval jar. Careful you don't get runs. After about 2-3 square ft of spraying you'll get used to it. Make sure and post some pics of your progress.

Will do on the pics. What about my question of sand or not sand the ZC primer I put down? Can says ready to sand or topcoat after 30 minutes. I just want to put down Majic primer on top of it WITHOUT sanding. Is that ok? Thanks.

I'd just scuff it a bit with a 3M scotch brite pad. Shouldn't leave much dust behind but it will smooth it down a bit. I'd then use a damp acetone rag to do a final wipe down before priming.

Please do not wipe down with Acetone unless your are doing a Gel to Gel profile.

Water and a rinse/tack should do you fine.

Here are semi-finished pics. Hull exterior is done except for one area needs touched up. Hull interior I want to do one more coat...little thin in a few spots. Trailer - Rustoleum Smoke Gray. Hull Exterior - Majic International Harvester White. Hull Interior - Rustoleum Smoke Gray diluted with Rustoleum white to lighten a few shades. The Majic is yellower than I thought it would be, but I'm happy with it. I got the benches made (two 1/2 marine ply laminated with TBIII and 1 layer of CSM top and bottom). Bringing a little glass to the tin party here. I did it more to stiffen them up so it doesn't sag. I plan to round over the edges with router and paint them with the Majic IH White...same as hull exterior. I'll do some more pics when I finish. Thanks everyone for the input.

Sidenote...the first mix I did with the Preval sprayers was like shooting drywall texture. I didn't thin it enough. I reread your post above and mixed the 50/50 acetone/mineral spirits at 1oz to 5oz of paint. Sprayed like a champ. I'll get the final coat on the inside of the hull much better than the first coat. I can't lie...the first spray coat on the inside was such a beating that I ending up going over it with the roll-n-roll to get it looking good. Chalk it up to a learning experience.
