This boat I just bought has a tach that registers 1200rpm with power off. I didn't look at it when we tested the engine before I bought it and I haven't cranked it up since.

Is this normal? I saw a tach on ebay that was registering 1200 rpm when not hooked up to anything.

NINE!

Wow, the count down is really on! Please accept a premature congratulations. :)

About the tach, most modern ones do that. They zero out when you power them up. But when they're not powered, they just point to wherever the residual magnetism in the mechanism sends them. Mine sits around 200, and I've seen ones that point up at 3000 or so.

Turn my engine off and the tach sits at 1000.
If I turn the key on, then off again, it will sit at 0.

Some meters "park" themselves when the power is off. If the meter registers correctly otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it.

My bayliner did that, but it always checked true against my shop tach when running.

I have a 2005 Suzuki DF140 on my boat.

The tach has an "hour meter" function built in. When the engine is off the tach shows the hours on the motor. The needle stays off the peg. The higher the reading the more hours on the motor. I don't have the manual handy for more details. Your tach may have a similar function.

What brand/model engine and tach is it?

I noticed my tach did something like that too. I was also concerned until I realized that the tach in almost every other boat on my dock was the same way.

Just normal operation
