analog voltage indicator

ok...it appears that my voltage gauge on the instrument panel is a little bit off. I crank the engine up and put a meter at the battery and get 14.3VDC. I go under the console and get a steady 14.3 reading as well. I"m looking at the gauge and there doesn't appear to be any type of tweak or adjustment for the gauge.
Can I get away with put two diodes in series(1.4 volt drop on the reading) and knock down the reading to 14v?? It's reading at the gauge around 15.5VDC, which is incorrect and I don't feel like spending 50 bucks for a new gauge when that one works. It just off by a bit. I just like having things reading correctly and not let them drift off.

Re: analog voltage indicator

we have done that on a car before to get back the calibration that was lost but not sure if you can do this or not to an outboard sorry.

Re: analog voltage indicator

Thx for the reply my friend. The electronics should be similar. I would guess the only difference is the gauge for the ocean is sealed.

Re: analog voltage indicator

your not making much sense. on one hand you wish all to be perfect yet you wish to jury rig an instrument that is indicating its not reliable?
I am confused.
good luck and keep posting

Re: analog voltage indicator

I don't believe I"m rigging the instrument incorrectly. I'm just putting it within the specs that it should be reading. That's all. It's like if you're looking at a power supply that is supposed to give ya 5vdc and you're getting 6. If you don't have the components to correct it.... then change the condition so the correct output is achieved. As long as the guage reads accurately....it should be acceptable.
Also...the reason why I'm doing this is...the gauge works fine. It's just at the voltage that it gives me a false reading(off about a 1 1/2volts). I don't see the point in spending 50 some odd dollars on something new when that I have works. Just have to correct the problem. At least that's the way I look at it.
