Can you have an anchor too big for your boat?

I mean a 35+ foot boat.

Re: Anchor

Well a battleship anchor would be hard to store but I bet it wouldn't drag

Re: Anchor

It's an interesting question.

IMO, Yes- you can have an anchor that's too big for the boat. An anchor requires a certain amount of 'pull' against it to bury the flukes into the bottom. A 16' boat won't generate enough pull to bury the large flukes of a 40 lb anchor. They'll just lay on the bottom, and the holding power you get will be only from its weight, not from its design. Might as well use a concrete block instead.

Anybody else?

sure . . . yes it would hold, but it would be impractical in terms of handling and storage . . . even with a windlass.

Re: Anchor

In terms of holding power, I don't think it's possible to have an anchor that is too big. Even if you're boat doesn't have enough HP to set the anchor, heavy winds would.

That being said, you might have a hard time getting it back up. It really comes down to convenience. If it's too big, or your equipment can't handle it, then it either won't get used often or will get abandoned.

Re: Anchor

your best bet is to go to a local marina where you are boating and ask them they will be able to set you up or send you in the right direction for the appropriate anchor for where you will be boating since they would know the type of currents and type of bottom

My opinion- sure, but there's nothing wrong with going up a size or two from standard.
My 34 footer had a properly sized 22# Delta when I bought it. It worked flawlessly but I didn't feel comfortable overnighting on the hook in windy conditions.
I went up to a 35 pounder and now sleep much better....:joyous:

The Delta Anchor times 300
