I just bought a 1993 Starcraft Islander and, at 72 years old I am wondering about a practical way to anchor. It is virtually impossible for me to go forward from the cockpit. I would appreciate your thoughts. I am on Galveston Bay here in SE Texas and the bay the has a good sand/mud bottom most places with good holding.

High gunnel StarCraft are like having a sail out.
If there’s very little wind you could put two small anchors off the back corners.

Here’s a screenshot from a similar discussion a few years back, courtesy of ESGWheel.
Basically, attach a line from your bow eye to the cockpit, then use it to attach the anchor line.

Take a well built person on all times when boating. Owners and old captains DO NOT do any anchoring !!!! Great wa to find out you are having a medical emergency.
And can not reach the communication equipment while laying face down on the floor. I have been that way 6 times in my life.
Most new people with a motorized anchor winch ( lifter ) Use it wrongly & burn it out. Only 1 big enough anchor used at the front of the boat. Some boats DO NOT have a STRONG ENOUGH anchor post to take YANKING from real waves............. Start a seperate post about what is needed to reliably anchor in a BAD storm.

I bought a small winch with a remote key FOB as a option. Logic being I could use either the push button control. Or the wireless FOB button unit. I installed some S S horizontal pullies with LINE traps. They keep the line in the pulley groove all the time. I mounted the motor part right next to steering seat.
I replaced the wire rope with line used by mountain climbers. Small diameter. No metal springiness. No broken wire strands to tear skin open. The unit had a traveling guide to lay the line neatly on the drum.
I bought a Bow anchor plate to prevent sharp points of the anchor from destroying the Aluminum bow area.
Everything worked perfectly. Except The loud noisy gears. When going up or down. Total cost 10 years ago was about $ 300.

Add a couple eyes, one in front and one in the rear. Make a large loop of rope that goes thru both eyes with little play. Now you have a continuous loop of rope running thru the eyes. Attach your anchor line to this loop the pull it around until your anchor line pulls from the front. When your done, pull the loop until you get your anchor line back unto the cockpit area so you can untie it. Did that on my 22' Islander for 10 years that I owned it.
