New to boating and wanted to ask about the proper way to anchor our boat. It is an 18 foot bayliner used in fresh water lakes.

Thanks.

Re: Anchoring

first we'd need to know your typical depth and bottom. Also wind/wave conditions

Then your purpose: overnight unattended requires the best techniques. Beaching is entirely different. And as was discussed today, anchoring in a cove with lots of other boats has its own rules.

You will hear about 7:1 scope, no doubt, but that is not practical or necessary in most casual anchoring situations.

Re: Anchoring

Thanks for quick reply.

This is for casual anchoring for a short break on fresh water lakes in VT. We have an 18 foot bayliner with a Chene Anchor with 100 feet of rope. Typically we would anchor in water that is about 25-30 feet deep.

I don't know "chene" anchors. You may be OK but you are cutting it close if there's any breeze. An extra 50' might be good to have along if you get in a little deeper and it's not working.

I assume too you have chain on the anchor; I'd go for 3' heavy or 6' lighter.

Re: Anchoring

If you are just anchoring to jump off every so often on nice days, the 7:1 scope is overkill... I was anchored in a protected bay this last weekend and had about 15 feet of rope in the water, which was 12 feet deep. It held perfectly, but the only force was from people jumping off the boat. zero wind or waves.

Re: Anchoring

instead of starting a new thread, can I hijack this one? What is the best anchor setup for me. Freshwater lakes of nc, mudish/sand bottom, 15ft skiff. I need a new anchor, what do yall suggest?

"What is the best anchor for me" is QUITE a hijack on a thread opened for "What is the best way to anchor". For a 15 foot skiff, a Danforth style anchor should work well. Danforth's have extremely good holding in a single direction. They don't always handle opposing tide, wind and current from the direction they were set. If they do pop, they don't always reset well. I won't sleep on a one anymore, and wouldn't consider ideal as a bower on a cruiser, but as a lunch hook in those conditions it should be fine.

I often use the worst anchor--the basic mushroom on a short line--even on a 21' deep v in tidal water with a breeze. I even (horrors!) tie it to the stern. Can't beat the convenience and quiet. But I wouldn't send a new boater to think he's rigged his boat right with that.

It's all situational. Everything about boats is.

And what you buy, and how to set it, are as different a conversation as "what guitar should I buy" (electric, nylon, 12 string, resonator?) and "how do I play it?" (classical? chet atkins? smoke on the water?)
