okay heres the problem.. I bought a new starter bought new starter relay and new battery. dont nk what else is the issue.. it only turns on when jumper cables are hooked up to the battery. if no jumper cables hook up when I try to turn it on all am hearing is a clicking noise until battery ends up dying. all the wiring looks free of corrosion any suggestions what should be next... its a 1978 ford 351 v8 omc motor

Are any of the cables getting hot?

buy a manual, consult the wiring diagram and then hook everything up as shown in the wiring diagram.

Probably not 12, more like 2 or 4 gauge, 12 is used behind your dash for lights. Who did you buy the starter from and does it have a guarantee?

I'm wondering if your engine is locked up. If you pull the plugs, can you turn the engine over easy?

That was my first thought to that u may have the engine hydrolocked with water or stuck. But u say the starter will turn over if u put jumper cables on? Have u checked the voltage coming from the battery? If it's a new battery it should be at least 12 to 12.5 typically.

Just took a quick read on your other thread and I'm leaning toward your outdrive may be in bad shape. Your previous thread indicated it would start out of the water but not in. There were a few more post which leaned me to maybe what ever is dragging, is getting worst. I will suggest pull your outdrive off and see if it fires right up.

no its a 12 or 10 gague wire I had to jump from the starter to post.. and yes thats what I was afraid of if it was o utdrive. out of water turns on with cables in water it struggles to turn on. starter does turn the engine on when hooked up on cables.. and he the battery does have 12.2 volts so its fully charged I believe. what could be dragging in the outdrive that would cause it not to turn on. plus is there a write up somewhere in thr forums on how to take it off am new to boats it'd a stern 800 drive omc.

Something appears to be real wrong. If you have a 10 or 12 AWG wire going from the battery to the starter, this is the problem. Your battery cable should be 2 or 4 AWG and go to the starter solenoid. When the key is turned to start, there should be a small wire from the key feeding 12V to a relay. The relay should have a larger wire (10AWG) which will send 12V to the starter solenoid relay side to engage the starter. Have any pics of the setup?

I see a 10AWG wire going from the starter solenoid post to the field coil of the solenoid. This was never the OMC design but I understand why it was done this way. The original design energized the relay which supplied power to the starter. The starter did not have a solenoid it used a Bendix drive to engine the flywheel. Now that you have a different starter then one designed for it, there is two solenoids being used. So the relay energizes and send current to the starter. The 10AWG wire is used to tap voltage off to energize the solenoid on the starter which in turns drives the starter motor. This could be done much more simple.

Before we get into possible rewiring options lets go back to why the starter will not turn over the engine. Find out if you can turn the engine over by hand without the plugs. If this is easy, then let us know and we can go further.

In that case here is my suggestion. Disconnect the battery ground side. Remove the 10AWG wire from the main terminal on the starter and leave it for the time being attached to the solenoid smaller post. Remove both cables (one from battery and one going to starter) from the relay. Connect the battery positive cable to directly to the main starter post which previously held the one coming from the relay. Reconnect the batteries ground cable.

Turn key to run, then touch the 10AWG wire and touch it to the battery cable attached to the starter. It should crank over,
