Re: and another new owner

It would be nice to have a smooth floor but I think I'll live with the ribs. You asked about the motor. I have not looked at it at all yet. The guy I bought it from, took the cover off & said look - it looks brand new - it does. & he put the cover back on. The boat reg ran out in '95 so it has't run in awhile. I think the battery is from '95 also. Hopefully this weekend I can play with the motor a little.

Nice boat. Lot's of bling on her.
The 60's had style that's for sure.
Thanks for the pictures.

Spent the afternoon with the axe to the grindstone
I'll put away that for another day.

I am not going to keep bringing food if this keeps happening! I mean, skinning a person is a delicate art, not to mention getting rid of the evidence, errr I mean scrap.
RR that is a nice boat. I think I would have to put a floor of some type in it though, walking on it as is has got to be tough on the rivets. I like the motor too, man that looks mint. Great pics and welcome again.

Red, I was given this same boat this summer and you are the first person I have heard of with one. As far as i know there is an ad on ebay from the 60's of it. It is the only picture i have found on the internet. Where the seat brackets are was a 14" wide board with seat mounts. Mine came with a 28hp johnson seahorse. Good luck with it. I am in the process of getting it ready for new paint. I will post a picture of mine soon.

Thanks for the replies. I am not sure what I got myself into! I didn't know I was getting something a little on the scarce side. I do see there is one on craigslist in minneapolis. That has just 2 plain plank seats & no floor. The back part of the boat would be easy to put floor in but as you go forward it gets quite tapered & the floor would end up about as high as the seats are now. I'll have to start looking at lots of other resto pics - my wife loves that - she knows where i am for hrs!

When I replaced my decking it too had that curve towards the bow. Went with epoxy coated 1/4 " marine ply and it bent just enough to conform to the ribs. Covered with Deco Dot vinyl. Lakelover did much the same but painted after install. Decking does not run all the way to bow. Pop riveted down easily. If you do new deck consider putting flotation between ribs and hull and deck. Mine has the two planks that I used to mount new seats to too. The wife will know where you are for a long time if you restore this rare boat. It will be fun and rewarding.

1/4" plywood will hold up with the extra flotation material to help fill the void between the ribs? I would have been afraid to go that thin. You guys are the experts. I'll give it a try. I thought 1/4" would bend that much, just didn't think I could walk on it.

I think the extra flotation would help support the thin ply. As long as it was in firm contact with the floor.

Re: and another new owner

Well, I finally had a chance to look at the engine today. The 40hp Evinrude is model - 40972RX - I believe that is a 1969 model. Not sure what the RX stands for. I was hoping it was the origanal engine but the boat & engine dates are 9 yr apart. I hooked a battery on & it spins over nicely.I know you are not to run a boat motor out of the water - does that mean not even 5 seconds?

A 5 second run without water isn't bad, but isn't good either. Every time it is run without water, you are wearing the impeller, plus hurting the powerhead. Water is what keeps them cool. The only time I spin a motor without water is when doing a compression test. I think others will tell you the same thing, DON'T run it without water.

Red, what's important is water to the water pump impeller.....it can be from a trash can (be sure motor is submerged to well past the cavitation plate) or a set of "ear muff" motor flushers you hook up to garden hose. water is the lube and coolant for these relatively fragile flexible (when new, at least) rubber blades upon which the life of your engine ultimately depends.

Re: and another new owner

Well, 3 years later I finally got it in the water. I had a floor in it for awhile - didn't like it so I took it out. I finally came up with this seating arrangement & love it. It still needs plenty of work but I at least now it floats & it really scoots across the water. Now I will start putting the rest together. I need to find little brackets to hold the windshield on. Need a dome for the stern light, refinish the wood & maybe paint the whole thing some time. But for now, I'm going to have fun. I hope these pics upload! if not, I will have a younger person do it.
