Was trying to remove both consoles today when I got tangled in an extension cord....fell on front of the engine and I heard a crunch.

Well....there is no motor mount on the front of the engine so the transom is supporting the whole sha-bang(I know! I know! It's one of the things on my to-do list). I started looking and discovered the source of the crunch. The drain in the back of the boat is NOT sealed so I was looking at exposed wood in the transom. Well...I guess you could call it wood, some of the bigger pieces I dug out of the little hole resembled wood.

Long story short.....removed rub-rail and am working to lift off "cap". Gotta pull the engine and outdrive to make transom repairs. How do I support the hull sides while it's apart? I thought about cutting 2X4s to length and screwing them from the outside across the inside of the hull. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

It depends on whether or not you have the deck out. The basic problem is if you replace the deck with the cap off and your deck is slightly wider than it was before, you will have great difficulty getting the cap back on.

If the deck stays in, your hull will maintain the correct shape. If you are replacing deck/stringers, then do that 1st with the cap in place except for the last 18-24" in the stern. (This may be impossible since you said you are in the process of removing the consoles if they are connected to the cap) You can now remove the cap and replace the transom. Finally, finish the deck in the stern area and replace the cap.

You could also do as you suggested and go the 2 X 4 route. One of the posters here (OOPS!) is currently extending a hull and used threaded rod to maintain the hull integrity. In my case, the deck didn't need replacing, but I needed to remove the stern area of the deck to get at the transom. Here is a link that may help as well: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=184482

Indeed, take some Kraft paper or cheap 1/4 ply and male a template befreo you start working on the transom. You will save much grief!

I used that blue foam used on a house under the siding. Easy to cut with a utility knife and really easy to work with.

The template is very easy... I used seacast but the template is the same, I clamped some cheap ply to the outside of my transom then traced the outline onto the ply. I had to trim a little because of hull thickness but it was fast and easy, just make sure you do what everyone is saying about blocking & bracing...

I was gonna use foam board to form a template once the engine's out, but, because the deck is already gone, I'm worried about the middle opening up.

May use the allthread like oops did. Seems like a good plan just would make bigger holes to repair in the hull. I have every intention of doing this to the very best of my ability. I don't want to worry about the integrity of it at 45 mph on the lake. Thanks guys. Your advise is appreciated and well heeded.
