Re: Annual Maintenance $$

your welcome.
I know myself, I feel better knowing how to do the work myself, but that's just how I am.

Re: Annual Maintenance $$

oil and filter for engine: $25 and .5 hours
oil pump out tool: $20
oil for outdrive: $20 and .5 hours
impeller change: $35 and .5 hours (keep your old one if the splines look good for a spare when you're in the middle of the lake)
grease for the different zerks (sic?): $5 and .25 hours
manual: $25

so, for a bit over $100 and a bit over an hour of labor...YOU CAN DO IT!
so i am curious on a brand new boat does one have to change the oil for out drive every year and also change the impeller , which is the prop, thats new to me, why do you have to change the prop every year, am i missing something

Outdrive lube should be changed annually, normally at the time you lay up for the winter. You always want to be on the lookout for water infiltration.

The impeller isn't the prop. The impeller is the rubber vane-type doohickie that sits in the water pump housing and pushes cooling water through the motor. Mercruiser Alpha drives have the pump in the leg of the drive.

As for the prop itself, you want to remove and replace that annually, too. Grease the shaft so the prop won't freeze to it from corrosion.

Read your outdrive manufacturer's owner's manual. It contains all the recommended maintenance.

To go along with JoLin if you are fortunate enough to boat all year then your change intervals will not be seasonal but dependent on the hours of use so its best to check your manufacturers specifications, most people just don't have the ability to boat all year long so we go by the beginning and end of the season.
