Annual Service?????

Hello all,

I have 1999 Johnson 225 HP Ocean Runner. When I got this ride last August I took it over to a local marine mechanic and had the engine serviced. He changed the impeller, water pump, fuel filters, plugs, lower unit oil etc.

I would like to begin having the annual service done around March/April so that it is done prior to the summer as it is when I will use it the most. I do not think I will put more than 75-100 hrs per year on the engine.

I have a few questions.

1. What do you all do as an "anual service" and what do you think is a fair price for that to be done at a shop.

2. I have only put about 35-50 hrs on the engine since the last service so if I want them done in March-April, do I do it now or can it wait till next year?

3. What other service would you do on a regular basis?

Thanks in advance.......

Change the gear lube and go. There's not a whole lot you have to do to an outboard, I have no experience with all the salt water precautions though.

The spark plugs will last a few years, as will the waterpump impeller. Change the water seperator each season, change the lower unit oil each fall, and pump some marine grease into the grease fittings. Treat the fuel with a stabilizer each fall. Top off the oil resvoir each fall, and check it for water a couple of time a year. I use a primer bulb and some fuel line to pump oil from the bottom of the oil resvoir, into a clear container. If there is water in there, that is where it will be. You might run some decarbonize chemical once a year. Check the spark plugs to make sure that they are medium brown or darker. Other than that, if your motor runs OK, let the mechanic work on someone's OB who needs him.

Do the annual service before winter...that way if you have water in your LU, that will be found before it has time to corrode over winter. Also, add some stabil to the gas to stabilize it over winter. Grease all fittings to force out old grease with fresh. Fog the cylinders with fogging oil. Remove prop, add fresh grease to shaft.
