YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN VERY HELPFUL. I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT MY 1971 MERC 50HP. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE SENSOR IS THAT IS MOUNTED ON THE SIDE OF THE MOTOR UNDER THE JACKET? IT IS A PROBE THAT SLIDES IN AND OUT OF A HOUSING THAT IS SCREWED TO THE MOTOR. THE WIRES ARE SHOT GOING TO IT AND I AM TRYING TO REPAIR IT, IF I CANT I WILL NEED A NEW ONE, BUT IT WOULD HELP IF I KNEW WHAT IT IS.

Are you talking about the electric choke solenoid? That pulls the choke flaps shut.

It looks like a black plastic sealed probe that that slides inside a black plastic housing. the probe has two wires coming out of it one is grounded to the motor and the other runs somewhere else? looks like some type of sensor?

Hi,
Sounds like it might be the Safety-Tilt sensor

If it is, it grounds out he ignition if the motor is tilited to far, to prevent starting.

This is a safety switch, and can be disconnected to allow trouble shooting. If it is removed your motor will work as before, with the added benefit?? that you can now start the motor in full tilt ( Dont do it )
