Another alignment question

A few months back, I posted about a vibration. So, now Iam thinking about pulling the motor to replace the pds bearings. One of the replies I got, was that I could pull the motor, by unbolting the motor mounts from the stringers. That way, I could replace the bearings, and not worry about alignment. Now, I am apprehensive about pulling the lags out of the stringers. Is it possible to leave the mounts in the boat? Maybe count the threads on the motor mount stud? Count the turns as I am loosening? The Stringers seem ok, but I dont want to open up a can of worms. Any advise is appreciated.

Agree with Bondo.... pull the lags. This way the engine mount height won't change.
If anything, raise the lower nut up just a squeak when you put her back together.

If you try to leave the mounts attached to the stringers, the engine will need to come up and over the mount studs, and that's tuff to do when separating the engine from the f/c. It's even more difficult when going back in.
If the stringers are soft, that needs to be taken care of anyway.

Make sure that your flywheel cover hasn't been replaced with a later single bearing PDS. There is no grease fitting on the later single bearing V-8 f/c. If you have a single bearing, the shaft should be able to come out the rear without pulling the engine.

Re: Another alignment question

Thanks everyone. The stringers seem to be ok, at least the mounts arent sinking, or anything, sounds good with the mallet, not a heavy thud, not like a hollow drum. Actually the boat is in pretty good shape for being almost 30 years old. If the stringers are soft, the boat is gone. But I am pretty confident they are ok, at least in that location, just was seeing if there was a way to do it without disturbing them. Next saturday, i will be pulling, so wish me luck that my assumption is right! lol. Thanks again guys!
