Re: Another brain teaser

Calculation goes like this....

147197952000 cubic feet in a cubic mile. (5280 ft per mile, cubed)
7.480519 US gallons per cubic foot.
=1,101,117,076,697 US gallons.
At 1000 US gallons per minute would take 1,101,117,076 minutes.

Now minutes in a year
60 minutes in an hour, 1440 minutes in a day, 525,960 minutes in a year (1 year is 365.25 days)

1,101,117,076/525,960=2093.5 years.

If the gallons is the other gallons (Not US gallons) then the time taken will be shorter by 20.1%, a total of 1743 years....

Looks like I goofed earlier...:redface: Another first for the year!:D:D

Re: Another brain teaser

The 1 cubic mile hole has 1101117140000 U.S. liquid gallons of water in it. So at 1000 gpm, it would take 1101117140 minutes. which is 18351952.3 hours, which is 2094.97172 years.
I didn't read any other replies, so we'll see if anyone matches me

Umm... WRONG AGAIN! Since you want to get all technical about it... 1 year is NOT 365.25 days, it is 365.24224 days. Which means you are WAY off... the actual figure would then be:

1,101,117,076/525,948.8256 = 2093.582155533574405608483596442 years, or 2093 years, 212 days, 15 hours, 4 minutes, 9 seconds and 25 thousanths of a second (rounded to the nearest thousanth).

Note how disappointed the townsfolk will be with you when they wake up on the 182nd day of the 2093rd year to discover at 3pm that their big pit still has 2596154.167 (rounded to the nearest thousanth) gallons of water in it even though you said it would be dry at exactly 3pm that day. Now imagine them chasing you down with pitchforks and torches as they have to wait another 30 days, 4 minutes, 9 seconds, and 25 thousanths of a second (rounded to the nearest thousanth) for the pit to finish draining so they can fill it with their favorite bratwurt. :D

Re: Another brain teaser

Is that a gallon or a US gallon?

If it's a gallon, then it will take 2,093 years and 6 months.
If it's a US gallons, then it will take 2,516 years.

Chris..........

It is a gallon and not a UK (or Imperial) gallon.:D:D:D:D

How come nobody figgered in the time to rebuild or replace the pump 19,768 times, and the diminishing capacity of the pump due to worn packing and mud sucking?

Re: Another brain teaser

I just got one of those solar powered wind chimes. Then im gong to hang my motor with duct tape. Then im going to put a mouse driven wheel under the cowling and take out my V-4 powerhead and put the mouse driven wheel in there. I was getting tired of servicing the oil injection anyways. The mouse on the wheel has less weight than the 4 strokes. and then im going to put the impeller from my bilge pump on the lower unit and mount the prop on the bilge pump so it will pump more water out of the hull if i get swamped from the mouse and wheel. That mouse sometimes will just stop and water splashes over my transom. I tell you what though he can get going at about 4500 SPM (Steps Per Minute). I have been giving him synthetic food and since i switched to synthetic food ill never look back!! His name is herman! And I Love Him!!!
