My gearcase is leaking out the back end. It is definitely gear oil. It appears to be the rear seal (prop shaft). I don't think the shaft is bent as there is no undo vibration while running. Is this something a backyard mechanic can repair, or should I bring in the pros? I have the manual, but it looks like it requires a special puller. I'm just afraid of opening a big can of worms in the driveway.

Give us a year and hp Mid-size. Usually the prop shaft seals are the easiest to change out. But the bearing carrier can be a bear sometimes to get out....sometimes they can pop out with a slide hammer.

It's an '86 with an older LU. Probably early-mid 80's lower unit.
