Can I use a shaft from an outdrive to align my engine? I am dropping a 1993 3.0 and outdrive in my 1987 boat. Are the splines the same on the outdrives? If so, cant I just disconnect the u-joint from the old drive to align the engine?

The shaft won't be long enough.

You could but you`ll have a hard time seeing in what direction you must move it. The alignment bar would be easier unless you have a spare shaft that the U joint area could be machined off 1/8 th inch undersize of the gimbal bearing. That way you could use a 1/8 th welding rod as a temp guide and finish with the alignment bar or input shaft.
