I have an old johnson, too. from pix it looks like a model KD9.8, the serial # is clearly marked and reads 596594. the number near it, is 27E25 and the last digit is either an 8 or a P ? If I guessed I would say late 40's early 50's but have nothing to base that on. On the cylinder walls it says
27E1. there appear to be various casting #'s begining with 27, but I dont know the relativity of those numbers. Can anyone direct me to the year, and hp of this unit, or how to go about discovering it? Thanks so much!

Re: another old johnson

Serial number 596594 was built in 1947. The model number for a 9.8 that year was KD-15. Those other numbers don't mean much.

Re: another old johnson

thank you for that info, it really helps. I now have it sparking, and it has compressiion. I am going through the fuel system next.Would it say KD 15 anywhere on it, or is it just a Seahorse, as far as model designation is concerned? I have a positive feeling it will start once carb and fuel system is cleaned. the decal on starting it is illegible. Any chance anyone can send what it might say? The lubrication decal is also illegible, and it would be fantastic to know what it says?
obviously im new at this and certainly appreciate the collective knowledge shared on this site. thanks !

Re: another old johnson

check out nymarine.ca, he has decals for the same year....not model, but the starting instructions are there, and should be the same.

Fuel mix is 1pt per gallon, check with the guys at www.aomci.org if TCW3 is appropriate.
I think it is but check them out.

acmeoutboards.com has owner/operator guides for the Johnson KS/KD motors.

Re: another old johnson

Hi , thanks for previous help, and I took your advice and got a copy of the owners guide for the motor. I have since got it to run and can start it on 2 to 3 pulls regularly. ( hurray! ) however, it needs some gaskets of course. Particularly the one from the power head to the lower unit. It incorporates the manifold. When running it leaks exhaust through it, and water, that I assume comes from the cooling circuit. I have some experience making gaskets for old steam equipment, and would like to have a go at replacing these. It would be terrific if someone could direct me to an exploded view of the engine? I priced the repair manual and being the stubborn sort, believe it would cost more than the motor is worht, but I havent ruled buying one out as yet. :)
