Re: Another one...Upholstery

Trying a new hobby that leads to a rewarding (hopefully lucrative) new endeavor/career, sounds like a pretty good result.

The Skeeter waited 9yrs for you to start the resto, another year (covered) won't be too bad....

Re: Another one...Upholstery

trimmed out the table....just for looks, and sanded it smooth so vinyl will slide easily

IMG_4717.jpg

this side of table I left trim 1/4" higher than table to use as a straight edge guide, and added a measuring tape to the top

IMG_4719.jpg

Having the straight edge ensures a square straight cut using my electric rotary cutter in the V groove, makes the cuts very fast

I am trying to think of something I can put in this groove...like a light metal angle, to keep the cutter from wearing down the groove with sliding it across... any suggestions?

Aluminum drywall corner maybe? If not that, then a "corner protector" for inside walls. Usually made of vinyl or plastic or plexi?

Maybe if the groove is a perfect 90 deg you could find a piece of allum angle to glue in or U channel.. I know what would be perfect . At work we install allum fry riglet trim that comes in all sizes and width's It has a flat screw flange on each side to receive joint compound.
If you just were closer I could dig some out of the shop. If there are any drywall businesses or supply places near bye they may have some in stock.

Don't they make self-stick teflon glide tape? It may already be creased down the middle... Woodworking supply store....

Re: Another one...Upholstery

As far as my channel goes, I decided to stop by a few machine shops and I finally went to an HVAC guy and had a piece of galvanized metal bent for the groove....should last a lot longer than bare wood.

I got my machine, but have not received the legs for table yet...So I used some saw horses to get the table set up, once legs arrive it will be easy to put it on

Impatient as I was to try it out, I ran this piece through the machine....mind you I did this one handed because my other hand was reaching under table to activate motor, so it wasn't perfectly straight. Lays a really nice uniform top stitch though

Will throw up a pic when table is built and inserted into the big table

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Thanks, I just hope the time and money spent on this table improves efficiency....my theory is sound, now to see if it works in practice!

Got table finished, pretty happy with it overall...only thing that bugs me is the vendor told me table dimensions were 24X48 and it was only 21.5X48 so my cut-out was wrong!

08012012105.jpg

Threw an old desk under the table to give me some drawer space....it was quick and free so I cant complain

08012012106.jpg

Put 2 2X4's under the legs to get it to match table height, the sewing table would not adjust past 33"

08012012109.jpg

came out pretty level

08012012108.jpg

I just love when a plan comes together....now I have to take it apart so I can get rid of that 3" discrepancy! Just kidding, I will learn to live with it

Wow! that set up looks first class...Awesome job!

As for the minor discrepancy, just build in a small filler piece between the machine table and the run out table...

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Thanks all, I put a lot of thought into how I wanted to set this up, I just hope it pays off over using 6 foot folding tables!

Here is how the piece of galvanized metal the HVAC guy bent me worked out....tool glides a lot smoother and should hold up much better than bare wood

WOW!!!! The shop and the table look great. Don't see how you could miss with this setup.
Hope to see lots of new vinyl and new projects going over the table.
Good luck with the new place.

Looking good JDA...

Got a question...are you planning on putting any kind of sealer on the surface? Both to protect the wood and maybe help the fabric slide on it better?

Re: Another one...Upholstery

I was planning to do 2 coats of epoxy resin, but now sure how it would hold up to being cut on...I ran the belt sander over it, you can see where it was knocked down some places, the ply I used was 11 ply thick 3/4 so belt sander ate through top layer pretty fast at the high points...it is smooth right now and vinyl slides easily.

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Need to figure out a different bar material for the bigger rolls...it is sagging some with the wooden rod on a 24 yard roll

IMG_4728.jpg

Got to put my machine to work, this guy put a new wake tower on and wanted his cover modified to work with tower, so I cut slots, and added a square cut-out around wake tower mounts, then added velcro to the slit so so it can be closed

lol finally my thread is about my upholstery work again!

Use galv or blk pipe from the plumbing aisle @HD... If you get the right ID pipe, you might put the wood dowel inside. The metal will flex too under enough weight, dowel would help stiffen it. And if you get pipe that's threaded, you can put endcaps on it to keep it from sliding out of it's slot :)

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Might seem a bit extreme, but you could get PVC pipe, a piece of rebar, stand them up with the rebar approximately centered in the PVC, and fill it with cement...We did this many years ago with 20 foot lengths and were able to support about 3-400 pounds of weight dead center with no deflection...Use another piece of rebar to push and shove the cement all the way to the bottom and fill it up solid...If memory serves, the 20 foot pieces weighed about 40-50 pounds each...that was using 2" diameter PVC...I believe it is the thick walled stuff, not the thin wall...compared to steel piping, the cost is less than half...and the PVC is more user friendly than a heavy steel pipe...

Re: Another one...Upholstery

So I will probably get booed off the forum for this! but I left my cozy little comfort zone of plywood, vinyl and staples...and went in the evil world of cloth, metal frames and hog rings.....

An RV scissor couch (folds into a bed)

Before, badly in need of recovring

08052012114.jpg

Could not find an exact match of fabric, but this one had all the right colors and floral so should blend well with RV interior

08052012115.jpg

Recovered, but not pulled tight...the frames are drying, had to remove rust and repaint them....Really pleased with how my pleats came out...the new machine is AWESOME

08062012119.jpg

All the pieces recovered

I know its not boat, but the concepts are the same and can be used for vinyl... and that's what I would like this thread to be about so people wanting to reupholster their own boats can get some ideas
