I posted a problem with the 1992 Johnson 60hp not starting about a week ago or so. It still runs great. However, today, I was on a bad boat ramp, so I used reverse to back it off the trailer. Everything worked fine. I went out on the water, and used reverse again, everything worked fine. All the sudden, reverse quit working when I tried it a third time. Forward works good. But when I put it in reverse, it doesn't engage. I didn't hit anything when I was in reverse at all. If you ever drove a 5spd vehicle and went to put it in reverse, and then when you thought it was in reverse and it wasn't all the way in reverse, it made that tinging sound and didn't go anywhere, that is what my boat did. Sorry for all the run on sentances, I know the grammar was incorrect. Anyways, My reverse doesn't work. This is probably a really stupid question, but is there some sort of transmission, or is it changed by cable? Any similar problems for anyone else? Thanks for the help!

check your cable adjustment, check your shift rod connection under your bottom carb. odd for it to just go out like that. also when is the last time you changed/checked your foot oil??

To be completely honest, I have no idea what foot oil is.

i think you need some help really.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2049494#post2049494

also disconnect the shift cable at the motor, and shift it manually, see if it will go into reverse. could be a cable has stretched or out of adjustment. also could be bad clutch dog gear in lower unit.

if you are going to try to work on it. you need the service manual http://www.outboardbooks.com/ they are expensive, but worth it.

Well, I learned some new things... All that was needed was a cable adjustment. In the process, I checked the foot oil and it was full and the oil looked very clean.

How often is the foot oil supposed to be changed and what kind of oil does it take? I'm going to order the service manual, but I was just curious. Thanks for all the help again.

Once a season is usually sufficient. If you live in an area with cold winters, you should definitely change the oil prior to winter storage. That way if any water got in there during the season it can't freeze and crack the gearcase.
