Re: Another prop question

Brian, you got quite a chore there!!
We ran our state shocker boats in 2-6ft of water and alot of that time was spent "IN" the rocks...don't know what engine speeds you are running when up close but we ran mostly at idle and when a rock strike occured, it kills the engine. Never did we have any lower unit trouble running in that manor. I do understand though, if you are not running at Idle, SS could be bad in some ways, but in "most" cases, the hub will still slip before any gear damage is done.....one disadvantage we both have with aviation. I'm an A&P as well, specializing in Garrett TPE-331's and TFE-731's..both around 32,000RPM at ground Idle and 41,000RPM at 100%

Walleye W., if alum is folded over or "mushroomed", thats justification for repair. You are removing weight by sanding the folded region..I'd say be careful if it's bigger than pencil lead, like the size OF a pencil, if you want the best longevity from your gearcase.

Walleyehed - I agree if the alum is folded over lots it need repair but I guess being the size of a pencil lead is about the size I was thinking by saying "minor dings". The weight of the alum I actually sand off on a minor ding probably cant be measured with most scales.

That's true, just remember the blade shape and area affect the way "that" blade pulls...at WOT, it can make a big difference.
