HI Guys I know this is a popualar question but can anyone tell me the year of this ser.0A975569. It is a merc 115 inline 6 cyl. I am going to be looking for either a used lower unit or parts for mine , I am experiancing metal filing's on the magnet at the drain plug so I do not think this is normal so I guess I have some work to do. Thanks
Rick

Re: Another Question on year PLEASE

Thanks just 1 more question I feel that I am fairly good with michanical items so I might pull it apart myself but my question is are there special tools involved in doing so , or would that be a mistake and I should just leave it alone and spin the dice and just run it.
THANKS

Re: Another Question on year PLEASE

Someone else will have to chime in about tools needed, i'm sure some tools could be jury rigged if needed. As far as spinning the dice and running it, remember if there's something failing it ain't going to get any better. Any shifting issues? How many hours on lube, condition ie:milky, burnt. How much material on the magnet, coated with material or just a few flakes?

Post a pic of the mag plug, if not too bad, I would flush housing, refill and recheck after a couple of hours of running.

Any other ideas out there?

Another question, what's your idle rpm, too high and it kicks the crap out of that lower unit

Re: Another Question on year PLEASE

Thanks for the reply I have no shifting problems as of now I bought this boat about 4 years ago so have no history on it . I do not think they changed the oil but i chang it every year and it was not or is not milky looking it actualy looks realy good except for the coating of filings on the magnet , some of which seems like almost pastey. As far as rpm I do not think it is to high but the tackdoes not work but does not grind in and out of gear.

It is pretty normal to have the magnet coated with filings. I had that for 20 years on my inline six. Chunks are a different matter.

If the new gearcase is from an inline six merc, it will fit your motor.

TW - it is probably not worth it to try tp repair a gearcase. You need special tools to remove the bearing carrier retainer and need to shim gears and the like.
