Re: Another Ramp Story

Also, on some older transmissions, if you break that parking pawl it has a chance of locking up your whole tranny. I think the mechanism is more separated on newer ones though. Still, its not as heavy duty as the gears themselves, really just a spring loaded thing that pops into a tooth to hold the driveshaft still. Thus: Emergency brake, let it grab, then shift into park. When leaving, do the reverse: Shift into gear, push foot brake, release emergency brake, then take off.

Right you are!

However the Parking Paw is very hard to disengage and usually releases with a nasty THUD with 5000lbs of Boat and Truck trying to migrate down the ramp and out to Sea!

The Manual brake does the same job but is very well behaved when told to let go.

Redundancy is always a good thing. Don't be THAT Guy! :D

UncleWillie,
I am agreeing with you 100% on this.
Most owners manuals refer to the manual brake as a Parking Brake. Its no longer there to stop a vehicle in the event of an emergency but to reduce the stresses on the drive system.
Anyone ever set the parking brake on a rolling F350? It reacts by beeping at you and keeps rolling...My Accord will lock the rear tires if pulled hard enough but not the truck.

When I have the larger boats out, one person backs down and the other person handles the launch. If the ramp looks slick the trucks in FWD. I also carry 40' of tow straps to assist fellow boaters when the ramp is not cooperating with them.

+1
Took me two days to get ours rebuilt when we bought the truck used. Using them keeps them working.
