Another rectifier / charging question

I've just recently replaced the stator and rectifier on my 1991 70hp Force for new Rapair/CDI parts.

I was tinkering today with the motor in a very large bucket, and decided to check the voltage at the battery.

With the engine off, the battery was showing around 13.5v, after starting at idle it crept up to 14.4v, but at a faster idle it went up to 16.8v.

Are these voltages a bit high? Would they damage the battery?

I won't be able to get any faster than that in neutral, so can't see what WOT would result in.

That's fine, rectifier does not regulate the voltage

Well, there was no spark on any of the cylinders, which could point to a bad stator (amongst other things) so before removing the flywheel to check the physical condition of the stator, I used an ohmmeter to test the resistance of the ignition windings (the red/blue wires) according to the manual.

Although the high speed winding had the correct resistance, the low speed winding showed an open circuit which was not right, so I decided to go to the effort of getting the flywheel off.

Then it was obvious that it was fried - it was leaking varnish from most of the windings. It was one of the black mercury stators that I believe were faulty from the factory (or a bad design).

I then checked the rectifier/regulator and that was shot also.
