Good Day! I am another unfortunate victim of the seemingly common problem of a stripped female dipstick thread on a volvo penta outrdive (mine is a 2002 SX-M). I unknowingly overtightened the dipstick and as a result am now researching my options. The option I am most keen on going with is the Heli-Coil vs replacing the entire part as many others have done (#19 below) as Heli-Coils are very reliable and that part is at least $250.

My question comes in regarding the removal and reapplication of the bearing cover (part # 19 below). I have already removed this and put it back on to make sure no pieces of thread fell into my outdrive oil. I thought I read that this part needs to be shimmed but I wasnt sure if this was still the case if I am putting the same one back on. Also, do I have apply any sealant to the areas where the bearing cover meets the drive? I just want to be sure no water gets into my gear oil :)

Any other advice is much appreciated as well in regards to this problem!

Thanks!

If you are installing a different cover, yes you will need to reshim. If you are using the old cover, just be sure to install the shims that was in it.
