Does anyone have tips on anti-foul painting a Volvo Penta (DP-SM/SX Style Outdrive) with Anti-Foul paint for the first time? Trying to remember what I did on my last boat but I think I just scuffed up the print with a scotch brite pad, wiped it with acetone or an alcohol, and then went right on with 2 coats of anti-foul. Is a primer needed or is this not the case since its already painted from the manufacturer? The drive is old but it looks fantastic as it lived in freshwater and on a lift all of its life. Sadly that beauty will come to an end since I boat in salt and need anti-foul on it.

Nearly every single Volvo Penta I've ever seen in pictures online and in person are corroded and have peeling paint. Is this a known issue on Volvo Penta outdrives? I'm a saltwater boater and my last boat had a Mercruiser that got 2 coats the first year, and 1 thereafter and never had an issue in over 10 years and looked great other than being painted with Anti-Foul. Planning to do the same with this Volvo Penta.

I'm also curious if people spray underneath the outdrive cover in the areas around where the shift mechanism is, without going directly over the shift mechanism. Seems like if that area under the cover isn't painted, it will corrode/bubble/peel like every other Volvo I've seen. What is recommended under that cover area?

Thinking of Using Hydrocoat Eco, or Interlux Trilux which has done me well over the years. I like Interlux since it comes in an aerosol can so I go heavy with a brush on the entire drive and then use the aerosol to get into crevices where the brush can't reach.

Thanks!
