I'm still a little baffled that you didn't just drop it off at the dealer and say "fix it," if it's still under warranty. Unless they tell you otherwise, this should be totally free for you, plus it documents the problem for you in case it pops up again after warranty expires...which can't hurt. Then again...a 4 year old Ford truck with almost 70K miles that's still under warranty? I thought they were 3/36. I'm not a Ford guy so I don't know how their warranties work.

Unless you're just trying to educate yourself. There's certainly nothing wrong with that.

In my opinion the best way to tackle any such problem is to get a factory service manual and follow the trouble-shooting sequences for "check engine light" to guide you through the diagnosis and repair. If you're just guessing at parts, you're sure to be throwing away so money to chase and pinpoint the cause of this problem. Factory service manual is the BEST investment you will ever make if you intend to keep this truck a while...they're all over Ebay.

I purchased the 100,000 mile warranty, and I did drop it off to the dealer today.

I wanted to get one of those code scanners anyway, cause it's something I should already have.

As far as a manual, I have the Ford CD manual. Pretty darn helpful, but it can get 'technical' in a hurry... It's not laid out for your backyard monkey.

The problem turned out to be the DPFE sensor. Something to do with the EGR valve?

Now comes the fun part... It wasn't covered under the 'mondo' warranty I bought! Needless to say, the quoted $200 repair bill wasn't something I intended on paying today.

So, I sent in the negotiator... MY WIFE...
She's a customer service rep herself, so I turned her loose...

My bill dropped to $20. :)
The screwlearship managed to get it under some kind of warranty issue even thought it wasn't technically covered (my faith thus restored)

It was only a matter of time before I had to learn about these new computer cars... It's inevitable that a sensor or something will go out.

I would have gladly fixed this myself, but I didn't' know if it was covered under warranty or not. Next time it probably won't be.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

H.

You'll learn sooner or later there Homerr, always send in the "Negotiator" first. Chief ;)

Your wife is due for a night out on the town :) .

The DPFE sensor (Differential Pressure Feedback EGR sensor) monitors the speed in which the EGR operates. A build up of scum around the EGR port can cause the sensor to tell the computer that something is wrong - SIMPLY CLEANING the port can fix the problem.

I'm glad you didn't part with 200 large.

Aldo

There appears to be some kind of "un-announced" recall on some of these sensors... Proly why they didn't give us too much resistance on paying for the labor...

Or it was the 'negotiator' !!

H.
