any external parts needed??

I bought my son an 2007 15 h.p. yamaha outboard about a year ago, When I purchased it the sales man said it would charge an battery, Now that my son has time under his belt with the boat and motor I'm needing to hook the charging system up for lights. My problem is now every one is telling my I have to put an external generator and or regulator on this motor No one has even looked at it to find out for sur. can any body tell me if it is true that I do or donot need an external part to get this thing to charge a battery.. It is a manual start
