I have a 1992 Yamaha 115 outboard, 2 stroke, oil injected that won't engage in forward or reverse. The cables seem to be fine. Any ideas on problem and how to repair.

Hey Laura,
Not sure how you determined the cables were OK, but if you haven't tried this already, disconnect the linkage to the shifting arm and then try to engage forward/reverse by manually moving the shifting arm. If still no go, you'll probably need to drop the lower end and inspect. When you drain the lower unit oil, check it for any evidence of metal chunks, etc. If you find anything larger than grains of sand, stand by for heavy rolls. Good luck, hope it's just a linkage problem.
Backlash

I am not sur on Yamaha but ... I changed my impellar on my Johnson and I had to disconnect the shift linkage. The pin or screw that connects the linkage to the lower unit may be broken or come loose.

Bob

My opinion is this is a question for a mechanic not a captain

The shift shaft may be weak or broken. Look into the gap above your lower unit at the bottom of the pivot tube and you will see a 1/4" rod, that is the shift shaft. Yamaha used steel instead of stainless steel for that rod prior to '95(?). I had to replace mine, so did many other people. There are posts about this subject in the Yamaha forum. Good luck, Jerry

Gentlemen..... we thank you for your concern and participation however, this thread is two months shy of being five years old! This was the last post by Laura! I am going to lock it up so we can help others with somewhat more current issues circa 2009 :D
