Talking about the camping tents that mount on the bed of your truck. I'm thinking about buying one of these for my long wheelbase Chevy and was wondering if they had any drawbacks? trying to get my girls interested in camping and these look like a good idea. Any comments?

spots

Hard to drive into town to get groceries or shop in rainy weather.
You have to drop the tent to drive down to launch the boat or go to town.
And they are small.

You can get fairly decent 11'x16' tent these days for $139, but you really need 2 people to set it up. Once up, there is room for cots, table, chairs, and girl stuff.

Or you can get a really good quality Eureka Equinox tent that you can set up by yourself, in a strong wind, for $299.

I love my Eureka, but sometimes I need more space, so I take the big tent.

I think the best selection and cheapest prices anywhere, for tents, is Campmor.com shipping for any tent is $6 !!!

http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/s...egoryId=250&catalogId=40000000226&storeId=226

They have the vehicle top tents too.

http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/s...goryId=45763&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=250

I have the Sportz truck tent(Tailgate tent II). I have found the whole thing can be lifted easily into and out of the truck bed as one unit if need be. It only takes 10 minutes to set up out of the bag if you know what you are doing. Roscoe is correct, its a bit small. For one person it is great. It saves room on the site too. If I need more room I went to target and got a 3 person backpacking tent for $30.

I jerry-rig a tarp over the back of my truck. Add a sleeping bag and I am all set.
Course, that is probably why I am single. :D :p

I don't see the point in one of those. Why would you want to unload the entire bed when you can just set up a cheaper tent that is bigger anyway on the ground next to your truck? It's not like the truck bed is any softer. When I go camping I never completely unload everything...that would be a huge pain in the ***.

ZmOZ- ever camped at a site with other people? I like it because it maximizes space. With two trucks, a boat, a camper, and a screened tent for eating, the extra tent on the ground to me is more of a pain then the truck tent. not that i have all that all the time, i bought the thing for the times that i do

Thanks guys, all good points. Me and the ol'lady would probably sleep outside and the girls would stay in the truck tent to keep some of the varmits off 'em. They're going through an anti-bug phase and waking up with one of those 4" dia. water spiders crawling up their leg would probably send them off the deep end.

Come to think of it, maybe I'll sleep in the truck too.

sopts :D

I have the Cabela's Alaska guide model tent with floor saver and deluxe vestibule. Pricey, but well worth the money. I've had the cheaper brands and have slept in puddles of water. This tent has been through 70-80 mph winds and major thunderstorms without a problem. Set-up took a half hour the first time but after that it takes about 10-15 min. I've even had other campers comment on the ease and speed with which the tent was raised. go to Cabela's and check out all the features of this tent - it's impressive.

Dan

A camper would be nice but I bet I'd have a hard time finding one for $200. :D Plus, a towable or motorhome in the parks where we camp need to reserve a site with a pad, tents can pitch along the lake or wherever.

-maybe when I'm older...

spots
