Any surprises after dewinterizing?

I can show you a couple neighbors up at our house in Big Bear that have tarps that aren't even a year old that have holes in them and the interior of the boat is shot. In one case, the owners are hardly ever there and the handles of the PWCs are sticking through the tarps and the vinyl on the seats are cracking.

Other boats that use tarps that don't get holes in them get bad mold problems.

I think both of these cases are neglect and owners who put the boat away without prep. Putting a cover on any boat while it's damp/ has water or moisture inside is inviting mold to grow, It happens with shrink wrap too. This process takes me about 2 hr's a year to construct/ tie down right but saves me hundreds and the boat is in perfect condition in the spring so what is the difference? If your a DIY person it can be done without risk. I was trying to upload a photo but this website wasn't cooperating. My setup looks similar to Further's when done.
Further- I'm on Lake Hopatcong near 181.

So I am up in big Bear and was going to take a picture of the neighbors tarp. They put a new one on. It lasted a total of 6 months. In the mean time, his seats were exposed to months of sun.

I am mainly talking about using tarps all year. Not just for when there is snow.

I think a hornets nest or somthing got up in the manifolds, was a pain to get started. When it did she caght fire. Blow smoke out a bunch of smoke for a while. After the bug nest burnt out of their the old mercuiser runs like a top...
