Any thoughts on hard starting?

I have a '98 3.0L Mercruiser with the 2 bbl Mercarb. When the engine is warm and I shut it off, if I turn it over again immediately, it starts right up. If I wait a few seconds, I have to pump the throttle to get it to start. I would appreciate any insight you may have.

check your float level in the carb

I am bumping this in the hope of getting more feedback on it before I take it out again this weekend. I doubt if I will tear down the carb before then, as I have to order a new kit if that is the consensus route. Thanks
